Team Pumpkin ABC

Team Pumpkin ABC is helping young people develop valuable coaching, leadership and life skills through its youth volunteer coaching programme.

With support from AIPFF, the club set out to recruit and train young volunteers to support coaching sessions at the gym while working towards England Boxing coaching qualifications. The programme has provided young people with practical experience alongside experienced coaches, helping them build confidence and develop skills that extend well beyond the boxing ring.

The coaching is far more than just boxing coaching. It’s a mix of life skills and people skills. Boxing is what brings us all together.

Chan Hadley, Level 2 Coach

Young volunteers have received mentoring from the club’s Level 2 coaches before progressing to support sessions alongside senior coaching staff. As their confidence and experience have grown, many have taken on greater responsibility, leading small group activities and helping to plan training sessions. Today, around nine young coaches attend each session and are nearing the standard required to undertake their England Boxing Level 1 qualification.

The programme has had a significant impact on the young volunteers involved. Through coaching, they have developed their communication, organisation and teamwork skills, while building strong relationships with fellow coaches and club members. They have also become positive role models for younger participants, creating an encouraging environment where everyone can thrive.

For many of the young coaches, the benefits have stretched beyond the gym. The experience has helped them build self-belief, improve their wellbeing, and develop skills that will support future opportunities in education and employment.

Declan, aged 15, shared:

“Coming to the gym and helping coach has allowed me to mix and meet more positive people. Since spending more time at the gym, it’s also kept me out of trouble.”

Team Pumpkin ABC remains committed to creating opportunities for young people to develop, lead and inspire others. By investing in the next generation of coaches, the club is helping young people gain the skills, confidence and qualifications they need to make a positive impact in their communities.
